The Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Education District III, Dr. Olayimika Ayandele has expressed the need to change the negative impressions associated with the teaching profession, stressing that all hands must be on deck to revamp the profession to take its rightful position of pride.
Ayandele, who made the call while speaking at an event organised by the District to appreciate Teachers and Principals of District III at Silverbird Gallery, Victoria Island, said that her intention is to make the teaching profession very attractive to the younger ones and make it a profession of choice for all.
The Tutor-General bemoaned the ways teachers were treated in the past, adding that the idea to celebrate the teachers in an atmosphere of fun was in recognition and appreciation of their efforts at reshaping the lives of the future leaders.
“We decided to take our teachers out of their usual classroom routine work to Silverbird Cinemas to see a movie, relax, have fun and interact. What we are doing in line with the October 5th International Day of Teachers is our own expression of love to our teachers and school principals”, Ayandele stated.
Also speaking at the event, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT Lagos Chapter), Otunba Adedoyin Adesina opined that if other administrators in the teaching profession could also design ways of appreciating teachers the way the District has done, people would be more interested in the teaching profession.
“What the TG/PS has done shows that she appreciates the efforts of the teachers and places value on them”, Adesina added.
The Education Secretary for Mainland, Mr. Moshood Mayegun said that the idea to celebrate the teachers within the District was very unique and described the gesture as first-of-its-kind.
“With this, the TG/PS has proven herself as an innovative administrator who had brought her administrative prowess to bear within the short time she was redeployed to this District. I want to, on behalf of education stakeholders in the Education District III, assure her of all the necessary support that will make her tenure a success”, he added.
