The Arole Oduduwa and Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II on Wednesday received members and Management of the Ojaja II Football Club, who recently won the keenly contested second Taiwo Ogunjobi Under-17 memorial Cup.
Ooni Ogunwusi who had earlier applauded the players and team managers through a statement, described the laurel as an awesome start for the relatively young Ojaja II FC.
The Ooni said, “I am impressed not only because you have won this big within a very short period of time, but to see pure grassroots sport particularly the game of soccer like we used to have it in the 70s and 80s.”
The Ooni who is the Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, advised the government at all levels, corporate organizations and individuals to create and support sporting activities in the grassroots.
“Sports is a unique way to engage our youths productively and I can assure you that we would solve a larger percentage of our challenges as a nation especially in the areas of economy and security if we uphold sporting activities nationwide.” Ooni Ogunwusi admonished
Peak of the moment was when the Ooni announced a whopping N500,000 cash gift for the team, promising to keep supporting the team’s activities including the prominent Ojaja II Principal Cup.
Ojaja II FC commenced the second Taiwo Ogunjobi memorial cup which held for three weeks in Ilesa, Osun state which was keenly contested by 16 Football Club’s across the Southwest region on a good note by emerging unbeaten throughout all matches played at the group stage, including the interesting match against the Amaye FC, Okitipupa, Ondo State in which the Ojaja II FC emerged victorious by six goals to one (6 – 1).
The semifinals was equally an easy ride for the Ojaja boys as they wrecked Brightville FC of Ibadan, Oyo State by five goals to one (5 – 1), before crowning it all on Sunday by defeating Success FC, Ilesa, Osun State by two goals to one (2 – 1) to win the laurel.
The agile Ojaja II boys got an icing on their beautiful cake by winning almost all individual awards in the competition. Kolawole Opeyemi emerged as the Most Valuable Player and highest goal scorer simultaneously while Idowu Joshua won the Best Goalkeeper award.
As part of their preparations for Dana Cup scheduled to hold in Denmark and the Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweeden in July this year to play in the youth tournament where scouts from clubs around the world converge to pick and select talented and outstanding young players, the Ojaja II FC team and it’s officials had a fulfilling training at the National Stadium, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory during which they participated in the pre-season tournament matches organized by Goal Project.
